EDITING

I have been lucky to have thorough and advanced editors teach me in my last four years on staff. Since sophomore year I have been editing as a copy editor, developing my own editing methods, mastering AP style and learning effective ways to help others learn and write.

FACE TO FACE EDITS

I find face-to-face editing important and efficient because talking to the writer helps to clarify their confusions, thoughts and general knowledge of their subject. Although written critique is helpful, conversation is quick and interactive. The majority of the time I do a face to face edit in addition to the written edit.

EDITING PROCESS

My process of editing begins by reading through the story without editing at all. This gives me the opportunity to understand the story, recognize major issues and see what the writer has to begin with. Next, I go through and comment on the focus and wrap graph because these two pieces are key to the story flow. Then, I go through to correct sentence structure and identify punctuation errors and AP style errors.
