DAISY BOLIN
These are a series of posts I wrote and designed for the More of This Kind Instagram.
BREAK DOWN PREVIEWS
I came up with breakdown previews which were posted prior to football games to compare major players and team statistics. Students frequently ask athletes what the outlook for the game is and with the previews, posted on Instagram, The Harbinger provides material for people to guess. This is a way to engage our audience.
COPY EDITING ACTIVITY
Part of my job is to ensure that the copy editors on staff are editing sufficiently and consistently. In order to check and improve their ability I handed out a rough story for everyone to edit. Each editor had two days to hand back their edits and I had a key with many potential edits on structure, focus and punctuation. After I collected them I read through, jotted down edits I didn't previously have and made comments on each copy editor's paper. In the end each copy editor received a "grade" to show them where they were in comparison to standard edits. There are 23 copy editors and although reading through and editing each one took time, the process made many copy editors realize all of the ways they could improve.
MORE OF THIS KIND
Outside of Harbinger I created a website and organization called More of This Kind (MOTK). The purpose of this group is to research and write about the psychological impact of kindness – and a way for me to experiment with design outside of newspaper format. I took storytelling and combined it with media, promotion and design. I organized a team of people assigned to do Q&A's, features and research about kindness and its psychological impact both short term and long term. This group is a work in progress, however, it has become another place for me to tell stories with one central focus: kindness. I promoted MOTK through an Instagram I created and announcements at school. I have not and will not be using Harbinger as leverage, the two are completely separate. Below I have linked the MOTK Instagram with a gallery of some of the posts I made for it.
